So how many of you knew what a bufflehead is? Anyway they are down in the shallows at the lake diving for small fish. They winter in the south and in the great lakes and summer north to James Bay. These are the ones too lazy to fly to Florida. They are not very close to shore so it is hard to get a good picture.
After consulting my bird book I discovered that the male buffleheads have heads that are mostly white; the females have heads that are mostly black, with only partially white sides.

ReplyDeleteMarc points out the male buffleheads are mostly white so the first three photos are of male buffleheads while the fourth shows both the male and female.
